Is It Safe to Use Cotton Swabs to Clean My Ears?
No. Cotton swabs should never be inserted into the ear canal. Despite being marketed as ear cleaning tools, they most commonly push wax deeper into the canal, increasing the risk of impaction. They also carry a real risk of perforating the eardrum if inserted too far or used when someone unexpectedly moves. The American Academy of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery explicitly advises against inserting anything smaller than your elbow into your ear canal. What Is the Difference Between an Outer Ear and Inner Ear Infection?
An outer ear infection (otitis externa) affects the ear canal — the passage between the visible outer ear and the eardrum. An inner ear infection (labyrinthitis or vestibular neuritis) affects the cochlea or vestibular system and is typically caused by a viral infection. It produces intense vertigo, nausea, and potentially significant hearing loss, but not necessarily ear pain or discharge. How Does Tinnitus Develop and Can It Be Cured?
Tinnitus develops when the auditory system — anywhere from the outer ear to the brain’s auditory cortex — generates abnormal electrical activity that the brain interprets as sound. The most common trigger is noise-induced damage to the cochlear hair cells, which disrupts normal signal transmission and causes the auditory nerve to fire irregularly. The most important thing to understand about tinnitus is that while the sound is real — it’s generated by the nervous system, not the imagination — the level of distress it causes is largely influenced by how the brain responds to it. Early intervention, particularly before tinnitus becomes chronic and deeply associated with anxiety or sleep disruption, significantly improves long-term outcomes.
